Songbird - an open source itunes-like music player. Like the firefox of music players? It’s customisable so you can display lyrics or artist information (for instance).

Miro – a pretty cool open source video downloader/player. I watch quite a few TED talks on it

Dropbox - super simple program that automagically syncs files between different computers and allows you to access them on the web. Useful for writing essays on different computers!
